Goal Setting is a big deal in life as a whole. But its purpose in career development cannot be brushed of easily. Career Development is not an event but a gradual process and this process derives its endurance from goals: vision, mission and purpose.
A goal has in and around it a vision, mission and purpose. These three anchors rightly place one’s life on a track of career transcendence everyday. So why High School Students? Because teenagers still have dreams, are still curious and they still know adventure while they are a ticking time bomb. They are susceptible to child marriages, abuse, child pregnancies (UNFPA Baseline survey 2014 says, rural areas have 10.3% and urban areas have 27.2% of 15 – 19 years girls already child bearning), school dropouts, drug abuse, poverty exposure etc. Goal setting for a teenager at this time brings them closer to a higher calling and purpose in life. it is a higher mark that will continuously tell them that, there is more in life, power to achieve is there, room for transformation has to be fought for and the best time to win over life is when one is still a teenager.
Careers Zimbabwe has designed this training handbook sorely to remind teenagers that their energy is not for sex but career success. Their curiosity is only productive when its oriented towards a goal. Their current life situations have no right to determine their future. And importantly, a life without goals is not a life worth living in.
