My Career footprints…

by Tinodaishe Moyo (UZ student)

Growing up I wasn`t really a focused person in terms of my career. I was not clear as to what exactly I wanted to do and my ambitions kept changing as I grew up.  At first I wanted to be an air hostess (upon my first visit to the airport of course),then teacher, pilot, at some point I wanted to be a nun, then due to mob psychology at times I thought being a medical doctor was the “in-thing”. Where I am headed now and what I am currently doing has never been part of my career dream.

When I applied to the University of Zimbabwe my first choice was Accounting and this was because I was good at it and I had passed it with an “A” at “A” Level. Unfortunately due to stiff competition I was offered Business Studies as a Degree. I was disappointed because I was convinced that is exactly what I wanted to do. I was looking forward to my second year as that was the last chance I had to rectify the situation. Mentors, parents and friends gave their advice pertaining to what they thought was best for me. I got my results in my second year and the courses I had passed more were on the Marketing side. So I carried out a self introspection session to see what was more important, ABILITY or PASSION, doing what you like or doing what you can do. My results were clear enough to show my strengths were more in Marketing than in Accounting. I was really confused at first but I discovered that as an individual I also like dressing up, public speaking and travelling. All these things one way or the other can be linked to Marketing.

Currently I am studying Business Studies merging in Marketing and I am an Intern at Chips Enterprise Solutions selling Sage Pastel Software. My role is being a Lead Generator which is within the Sales Department and I also do Marketing initiatives for the organization such as planning seminars and so on. Fortunately what I am studying is what I am doing. As I got in the industry I realized that at times you learn and grow as you go. I started to put into use my personal traits in relation to my job and everything turned out to be just fine. I actually love my job and I enjoy it. I chose ability first and then made my career my passion. Sometimes things do not go down as we want them to because God will be having a better plan for us. The mistake we make in life is to try and hold on to things that pulled us back and not move on. I could have persisted in migrating to Accounting but who knows; maybe it was going to wear me out. It is good doing what you want to do, where your passion lies but always remember you can always turn you ability into your passion.
